SVC's Annual General Meeting 2023/24

Unveiling the Impact: SVC Volunteers Making a Difference

Gathered within the vibrant halls of Cardiff University's Centre for Student Life, the annual ceremony of Skills & Volunteering Cymru (SVC) unfolded into a memorable celebration of community, service, and dedication. This year's Annual General Meeting (AGM) was nothing short of extraordinary, as we had the distinct honour of being joined by esteemed guests, including the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Bablin Molik. A former SVC volunteer during her student days at Cardiff University, Councillor Molik's presence added a special touch to the event, symbolising the enduring connection between SVC and the broader community. Accompanied by her husband, Molik Musaddek Ahmed, the Lord Mayor graced us with her inspiring presence, underscoring the profound impact of volunteering and community engagement. As we reflect on this momentous occasion, delve into the highlights and achievements that have marked another sensational year for SVC.

SVC's Chairperson, Heidi Smith, a stalwart advocate for community empowerment and social change, introduced the proceedings with a warm welcome to all. Heidi presented the Annual Report, a comprehensive document encapsulating the essence of SVC's mission and impact, providing a vivid overview of the charity's vision and values. From fostering inclusivity to championing accessibility and environmental sustainability, SVC's strategic pillars were meticulously outlined, showcasing a steadfast commitment to nurturing vibrant, resilient communities. The report also delved into the myriad projects and partnerships that have characterised SVC's journey, underscoring the organisation's unwavering dedication to collaborative action and transformative change.

Following Heidi's introduction, we were honoured to welcome Andrew Hill from HSJ Accountants, who provided a comprehensive overview of SVC's financial position. His insights allowed us to reflect on our commitment to maintaining strong accounting and banking relations. A heartfelt thank you to Andrew for his invaluable contribution. With Andrew's presentation, the formalities of our celebration came to a close.

The highlight of the evening was our Awards Ceremony, where we had the opportunity to showcase some fantastic video overviews of our current projects and partnerships. Owen and Alisha, participants of our first International Volunteering Exchange Trip to Catalonia, generously shared their firsthand experiences from the trip, made possible through funding from Taith. We provided an overview of our Health and Social Care partnerships, and Nicola, a Guardian from the Be Friends project, eloquently spoke about her great nephew's transformative experience of Befriending from a beneficiary perspective. With hearts full of inspiration, we proceeded to present our much-deserved awards.

The Lead Volunteer Awards marked a significant moment in the evening, honouring individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty in their roles. Being a Lead Volunteer encompasses a wide range of responsibilities beyond those of a general volunteer. It involves attending specialised training sessions, monitoring attendance, and actively engaging in events, fundraisers, and socials. Lead Volunteers play a crucial role in coordinating and managing community projects aimed at supporting vulnerable, marginalised, and disadvantaged members of our community. The role demands a diverse skill set, including communication, leadership, project management, and empathy. Congratulations to all! 🏆

Next, we celebrated our Volunteer nominations, individuals who have surpassed expectations in their roles, demonstrating exceptional commitment and dedication. Watch the video below to meet each of our outstanding SVC superstars! ⭐

Before indulging in the delectable buffet, generously donated by Cardiff University, Shiny Happy People treated us to a delightful performance by their inclusive choir, the Shiny Happy Choir, sponsored by Big Lottery funding. Their rendition of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", followed by "Don't Worry About A Thing" in British Sign Language (BSL), had the entire audience singing, dancing, and signing along.

We extend our sincerest gratitude to everyone who joined us in making this event a resounding success. Special thanks to the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Councillor Bablin Molik, and her husband, Molik Musaddek Ahmed, for gracing us with their inspiring presence, symbolising the enduring bond between SVC and the community. Our heartfelt appreciation goes to SVC's Chairperson, Heidi Smith, for her unwavering dedication to community empowerment and social change, and to Andrew Hill from HSJ Accountants for providing valuable insights into SVC's financial position. Not to mention, the fabulous presentation of awards by Rebecca King! We also express gratitude to Cardiff University for graciously hosting us at the Centre for Student Life and providing delicious catering for the evening. The delightful performance by Shiny Happy People's inclusive choir added joy and vibrancy to the occasion, highlighting the power of inclusivity and diversity. Thank you to all volunteers, nominees, and awardees for your exceptional contributions and commitment to SVC's mission. Your dedication fuels our efforts to create positive change and nurture resilient communities!
