The Ash Ward and Day Service is a summer mental health project where volunteers will either support day patients with acquired brain injury on the unit or patients on the inpatient service. Support on the day service will include meeting and greeting patients onto the ward, helping make hot drinks, supporting meal times as well as participating in some groups and encouraging social activities. Volunteers supporting the inpatient service will focus on befriending and facilitating activities such as arts and crafts.
The patients are aged between 17 and 65 years with moderate cognitive, behavioural and emotional difficulties rising from an Acquired Brain Injury. The majority of patients within the service are male.
Volunteers provide friendship and company to the patients during their visit and in addition enables volunteers to gain clinical mental health experience. As a volunteer you will experience groups facilitated by members of the multidisciplinary team. Through volunteer engagement the patients develop their social skills and gain back confidence they may have lost as a result of their Acquired Brain Injury.
Volunteers can attend once a week (Mon-Thurs, 10am-2:30pm). Please bear in mind your avaliability when applying for the project.
